Inferences and Artistry with “This Is Not My Hat”

These third grade students got creative and demonstrated a whale of a sense of humor with a post-reading activity for Jon Klassen’s This Is Not My Hat. This wildly funny book is one of three in a series. They all appeal to students of all ages thanks to their subtle humor, and their language uses simple grammatical structures and tons of sight words.

After an interactive read-aloud, they were asked to make inferences about what happened to the little fish, filling in the narrative gaps of an ominous, ambiguous ending. Not only did they enjoy drawing the simple characters, but they incorporated humor and wit into their responses.
