Creative Writing
Writing becomes fun when we invite learners to enter the world of a story. Here are some clever ideas to get you started!
What’s Next?
After reading, invite readers to imagine what happens after the story ends. They can draw a scene and write as little as a few words or as much as a whole story that extends the narrative beyond the page. Other ideas are to write about what happened before, write from another character’s perspective, or write a different ending.
Create a Caption
This works especially well after “reading” a wordless picturebook as a group. Provide students with a copy of one of the book’s pages and invite them to write a caption or add word bubbles. Combine all the illustrations into a class book when you’re done!
Model Text
Let students write their own versions of a beloved fairy tale or series book. Differentiate by inviting them to create just a book cover, a single page, or more!
